What is World Consumer Rights Day?
- Every year, on March 15, we observe World Consumer Rights Day.
- This day reminds us that consumers have important rights and need protection.
- The first time this day was observed was in the year 1983.
- We celebrate on March 15 because, on this day in 1962, President John F. Kennedy spoke about consumer rights for the first time.
- The theme for the year 2025 is ‘A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles.’
What the Department of Consumer Affairs is Doing:
- The government has made new rules to help consumers.
- The Consumer Protection Act of 2019 replaced the older 1986 law to make consumer protection better.
- There are consumer commissions at three levels: District, State, and Central. These commissions help solve problems faced by consumers.
- If a complaint does not need testing, it should be solved in three months. If testing is required, it should be solved in five months.
- The Consumer Welfare Fund provides money to help consumers and strengthen consumer organisations.
- The money is divided in a 75:25 ratio between the Central and State governments. For special states, it is divided in a 90:10 ratio.
- In the year 2024-25, ₹32.68 crore was given to states from the fund.
- 24 States and 1 Union Territory have set up these funds.
Making Complaints Easier:
- The E-Daakhil Portal is an online system where consumers can file complaints.
- This system makes it easy to file complaints without having to travel.
- The E-Daakhil was launched on 7th September 2020.
- E-Jagriti is a system that helps in filing and keeping track of cases.
National Consumer Helpline (NCH):
- The NCH is a central place where consumers can register their complaints.
- NCH 2.0 has new technologies like speech recognition and support for many languages.
- The NCH is available in 17 languages, including Hindi, English, and other regional languages.
- Consumers can register complaints through the toll-free number 1915, the INGRAM portal, WhatsApp, SMS, email, the NCH app, the web portal, and the Umang app.
- More than 1000 companies are partnered with the NCH to solve complaints quickly.
Helping Consumers Make Good Choices:
- The Jaago Grahak Jaago Portal and Mobile App give information to help consumers make informed decisions.
- There are rules for e-commerce to protect consumers from unfair practices when shopping online.
- The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has made rules to prevent unfair practices in online shopping.
- The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made a draft standard for e-commerce to make online shopping fair.
- This BIS standard ensures clear product information, protection of consumer data, and a good system for solving problems.
What is E-Daakhil ?
This is a website where you can write down your complaints if you have problems with something you bought. It is made to make it easy and fast to tell about your problems.
What is NCH 2.0?
This is an improved telephone help service for people who buy things. It can now understand many languages and helps to manage complaints better.
What is e-Jagriti?
This is a system that helps to keep track of complaints. It makes it easier to file complaints and see what is happening with them.
What is BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)?
This is a government office that makes rules for how things should be made in India. They also check if things are good quality.
What is CCPA (Central Consumer Protection Authority)?
This is a government office that looks after the rights of people who buy things. They also stop unfair business practices and false advertisements.
What are Dark Patterns?
These are tricky ways used on websites to make people choose things they may not want. They are used to fool people.
