Lachit Barphukan Police Academy Inauguration
I. National: Government Initiatives & Infrastructure
The Union Home Minister, Mr. Amit Shah, opened the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam. This academy is made to be a very good police training centre, not just for Assam, but for all the states in the Northeast.
The first part of the academy building is finished. It cost ₹167 crore. The total cost of the whole project is ₹1050 crore. The academy has very modern facilities. Police officers from other states, like Goa and Manipur, will also get training here.
The Government has also worked hard to bring peace to Assam. They have made peace agreements with groups like the Bodoland group in 2020, the Karbi Anglong group in 2021, and other tribal groups in 2022. They also made agreements with ULFA, and with Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh in 2023. More than 10,000 young people have put down their weapons and joined the normal life of the country.
The Government is also trying to start a semiconductor industry in Assam. This will cost ₹27,000 crore. In the Advantage Assam 2.0 program, agreements worth ₹5.18 lakh crore have been signed. The Central Government has also given ₹3 lakh crore for building new roads and bridges.
Assam has received more money from the Central Government. The amount has gone up from ₹1.27 lakh crore to ₹4.49 lakh crore.
Some important building projects are:
- The Bharatmala project, with over 200 kilometres of roads, costing ₹10,000 crore.
- The Dhubri-Phulbari bridge, costing ₹3,000 crore.
- The four-lane road from Silchar to Churaibari, costing ₹3,400 crore.
- The embankment and road on Majuli Island, costing ₹1,000 crore.
- A six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra river.
- The road from Majuli to Jorhat, called NH 715-K, costing ₹382 crore.
- The expansion of Gopinath Ji airport, costing ₹1,200 crore.
- Railway projects, costing ₹9,000 crore.
- The AIIMS hospital, costing ₹1,000 crore.
- New medical colleges in Tamulpur, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, and Dhubri.
The Government has also started many welfare programs. These include:
- Providing tap water to 58 lakh homes.
- Giving free medical treatment (up to ₹5 lakh) to 1.8 crore people.
- Building toilets in 43 lakh homes.
- Giving free rice (5 kilograms per person per month) to 2.32 crore poor people.
- Giving 51 lakh gas cylinders and 21 lakh houses.
The Police have also improved the law and order situation. The number of people found guilty in court has increased from 5% to 25%. The police are now focusing more on the rights of citizens and using the new criminal laws.
II. Historical & Cultural Significance
Lachit Barphukan was a brave Assamese soldier who defeated the Mughal army. His life story has now been made available in 23 languages.
